Social Justice Grant Making Social Tops $3.7 Billion

Social justice-related funding by U.S. foundations climbed to nearly 15 percent of overall grant dollars in 2008, according to the Foundation Center’s Key Facts on Social Justice Grantmaking. During most of the past decade, social justice giving had represented a smaller 11 to 12 percent of grant dollars awarded by foundations included in the Center’s annual grants sample. Among the other key findings:

  • Economic development benefited from the largest share of social justice grant dollars in 2008;
  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ranked as the top funder of social justice-related activities;
  • Close to half (46.9%) of the social justice-related funding targeted international efforts.

For the purpose of this report, social justice philanthropy was defined as “the granting of philanthropic contributions to nonprofit organizations based in the United States and other countries that work for structural change in order to increase the opportunity of those who are the least well off politically, economically, and socially.”
