1099 Repeal Top Issue For ASAE's American Associations Day

Participants in American Associations Day (March 29-30), ASAE's annual legislative fly-in, will have a host of time-sensitive issues to discuss with their Congressional delegation this year. American Associations Day is the only fly-in for association professionals and volunteers to educate their members of Congress on issues important to all associations.

Topping the list of concerns will be repealing the new Form 1099 requirements enacted as part of the new health care law. The law requires all businesses and nonprofits, beginning in 2012, to report all payments to a for-profit vendor totaling over $600 annually on a Form 1099. ASAE is concerned that reporting such mundane items as office supply purchases and hotel stays will overburden associations (especially smaller ones) and be a financial and human resource burden if it is not repealed within the next year.

With increasing federal budget deficits drawing constant Congressional attention, fly-in attendees will also be educating Congress on the value of association tax-exemption and that reducing or eliminating that exemption to balance the budget would do more harm to the economy and society. To help illustrate this message with examples and statistics, participants will bring the Power of A campaign messaging and information to their visits to show concretely the value of all associations to every state, the nation and the world. In addition to these issues, American Associations Day will also focus on further health care reforms, nonprofit governance, and Internet privacy issues.

Information on American Associations Day and registration can be found at www.thepowerofa.org/flyin. Participants from outside-the-Beltway may be eligible to receive a $300 scholarship to help offset some of their travel costs. ASAE also offers a one-day program where attendees can come in just on March 30 and receive training needed to conduct their Hill visits.
