Marketing General Incorporated (MGI) recently conducted two polls for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) that focused on specific concerns of their member ER doctors. The first ER poll addressed how the implementation of the Affordable Care Act had affected emergency patient loads. The responses indicated that almost 50% of ER doctors had seen an increase in patient load since the law took effect January 1, 2014. In addition, 86% of emergency doctors expected ER visits to increase over the next three years. The poll findings underscored the challenges of extending health coverage to more people; improving patient access to primary care; and increasing patient reliance upon the emergency room as a primary-care facility. A follow-up poll focused on the impact of competition from urgent care centers or other walk-in emergency medical facilities. The survey included questions on geographic locale of the facilities; patient demographics; and the need for specific individual state criteria and regulation for urgent care staffing and equipment. Seventy-two percent of ACEP members surveyed believe that states should have specific requirements for urgent care centers.
