Using Social Media to Promote Associations: It’s All Good; Or Is It?
On March 2, attendees at NYSAE’s annual Meet NY program learned both the good and bad sides of using social media to promote their associations and programs. Jim Spellos, president of Meeting U, shared with the group the hottest technology applications and how associations can use them to their advantage. Then Barbara Dunn, an association law attorney and partner with Howe & Hutton, Ltd., shared the potential dangers in using such technology and how associations can minimize or eliminate the risk of liability. Following is a summary of each speaker’s perspectives, tips and best practices.

NYSAE Law Shared Interest Group Launched; Beware NYPMIFA
In the last quarter of 2010, NYSAE formed a new shared interest group, the Law SIG. Limited primarily to C-suite executives of tax-exempt organizations and lawyers serving the NYSAE membership, the Law SIG has been developing a presence on the NYSAE website, including discussions of legal issues and the posting of legal information useful to senior executives in the tax-exempt organization community. The Law SIG also held its first two quarterly luncheons.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Web Design
Imagine a mall with two shops that sell nearly identical merchandise, for nearly identical prices. Both shops are conveniently located in the same area, clean, brightly lit and well stocked. Search Engine Optimization Basics for Associations
Nice website. Shame I didn’t find it when I did research on your association’s industry. Associations are natural thought leaders and like to be known as the go-to expert for their niche. However when I ask web users, “How do you research something related to your work?” their answer is almost always “Google.” Not, “I visit my association’s website.”

To highlight the numerous ways associations are improving the economy and society, ASAE will be holding its inaugural The Power of A Week, a week dedicated to different aspects of The Power of A campaign. Study Shows Americans Plan to Give More to Charity in 2011
For the first time since the recession began, Americans say that in 2011 they are more likely to increase their giving to charity than decrease their charitable support, according to the annual Dunham+Company New Year’s Philanthropy Survey conducted by Wilson Research Strategies.
