Joanne S. Barry, CEO and Executive Director of the New York State Society of CPAs, was recognized as one of 2015’s Most Powerful Women in Accounting by CPA Practice Advisor magazine. For the past five years, Barry has also been selected as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting by Accounting Today magazine. Barry is President-Elect of the CPA Society Executives Association Board of Directors and serves on the Montclair State University Accounting, Law and Taxation Advisory Board. She also serves on the Department of Accounting and Taxation Executive Advisory Board at St. John’s University’s Peter J. Tobin College of Business; the Accountants Forum Board of Directors; and on NYSAE’s Board Directors.

The Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland, has retained Nicole Millman-Falk, Millman-Falk Communications, to serve as Editor of its new monthly digital newsletter. Millman-Falk, who serves as Chair of NYSAE’s Awards Committee, was also recently hired by The American Friends of Bar Ilan University for a writing project featuring the school’s professors.

The #SubwaySelfie campaign, developed for Transit Wireless, used strategic social engagement to compel subway riders to take and upload photos in New York City subway stations, an area in which cellular and Wi-Fi service is still new. The campaign demonstrated the popularity and consumer marketing potential of Transit Wireless’ underground Wi-Fi and cellular network. The ThinkCopper.org blog site was developed to better facilitate and engage copper producers with consumers and other stakeholders online through sleek visuals and dynamic content.

City & State Reports honored the Hotel Association of New York City (HANYC) with its inaugural Special Award for Corporate Citizenship. HANYC’s Chairman Vijay Dandapani and President Joseph E. Spinnato, CAE (right) accepted the award on behalf of the Association. “Hotels are ambassadors for a thriving, multibillion dollar tourism industry, and we understand our responsibility to maintain the highest standard for New York City’s brand,” said Spinnato.

The Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board recently launched meetLA.com, a new website designed as a comprehensive, one-stop gateway for meeting professionals looking to conduct business in Los Angeles. Readily accessible from all mobile devices, the website includes information on new and refreshed hotels, group dining, green meetings and airport options. It also offers tools to navigate the city, including:

  • Find a Venue: Users can research L.A.’s portfolio of venues including hotels, event spaces, or the Los Angeles Convention Center and filter between L.A.’s regions, anticipated attendee numbers, meeting room totals, and minimum square footage to immediately obtain targeted results.
  • Compare Venues: Selected locations can be compared with detailed descriptions and up-to-date meeting room specifications.
  • Interactive Mapping: An integrated Google map displays selected venue locations, estimated distances, nearby attractions, and public transportation routes.

Marriott’s Meeting Services App includes a new billing enhancement, designed to allow meeting planners to customize their billing and respond to charges instantly and discretely through the app. Customers can select daily and final bill content preferences and specify whether in-person, email, or mail delivery is preferred. They can also use the app to ask questions or electronically dispute Banquet Event Checks and Group Master Charges while the event is still fresh in their minds. The app is available on any web-enabled device at nearly 800 hotels in more than 50 countries, in 20 languages.
