I wasn't convinced that I needed to attend any professional education on cyber security. And then NAPNAP's auditors started asking me about our security measures. I didn't know the answers, and decided I'd better start learning. More recently my executive staff team and I started talking about how to set up membership payment plans. I know NAPNAP is PCI compliant but I didn't know what that really entailed. While I fully trust the experts on my staff and contractor teams, I realized I need to understand more of the details so I can steer strategy. "What the Hack!?! A Cyber Security Summit for Association," presented by NYSAE on May 17, 2017 at the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel, is going to get me up to speed. Who want to join me?

    Hi Cate,

Thanks. Will be glad to see you and your colleagues at the event.

And wow, especially after the global Ransomware attack (and feared second waves from copycats and/or the original hackers) that's been all over the news for the past few days. Ransomware essentially holds a computer hostage until you pay a fee to release the data from being held captive. What's more, if users do not pay in time, their data can be locked indefinitely. That can be a real bummer!

That aside, I think it is critical that multiple people in an organization, particularly those who are held responsible for handling member and transactional data, know what to do should that scenario come up again...and others like it. All too often, cyber security is put in a corner and left up to IT to figure out. And while IT is certainly on the front line and totally necessary in defining an appropriate cyber defense and recovery strategy, today, it is nearly everyone's job in the organization to understand and recognize just what threats are out there...and what is even possible.

I certainly encourage everyone in earshot to consider attending this Wednesday's half-day "What the Hack!?!" Cyber Security Summit in New York City. You'll be glad you did! We'll be sharing with attendees all of the best practices and demonstrating how cyber thugs can get around established defenses, and more. Check it out!

Like on other home security cameras they use cloud storage for data, much safer.
