Cutting Through the Congressional Clutter

Advocacy is not always easy and is, often times, filled with unique challenges, gridlock, red tape, and competition. NYSAE, with its collective experience in the association community, is pleased to host our next Deep Dive event where we will be sharing some best practices, strategies and tactics for breaking through local, state and federal barriers in order to reach representatives and administrations.

We will be providing key insights and takeaways that everyone can take back to their organizations to enhance their government relations practices.

Session I:
9:00 AM — 10:00 AM

Congressional decision makers are facing more data, perspectives, and opinions on the federal government than over before. Long gone are the days “getting advocacy results” with an email, a phone call or a meeting. Today, cutting through the immense amount of information Congress receives and being heard means a new approach to sustained communication with elected officials.

The Presenter, Dr. David Rehr, is one of the top congressional communication experts in the United States. He is a Professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. He is the author of The Congressional Communications Report, now in its third edition, landmark research on communication methods and preferences of congressional offices, their staffers and those working to influence them.

Rehr will cover topics, including:

  • The enormous marketplace for advocacy
  • Building relationships with Capitol Hill
  • Where congressional staff go to find information
  • 9 things you need to know about members of Congress before asking them to help
  • Understanding what a Member of Congress can do for your organization
  • 5 techniques to build a meaningful relationship with Members of Congress and staff
  • Leveraging advocacy tools to break through the clutter
  • Being remembered by the Congress
