ASAE Sets Example by Offsetting
Carbon Footprint at Annual Meeting & Exposition

For the first time, ASAE is partnering with American Forests to plant a tree for every person who attended the 2012 ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition, August 11-14. This effort, part of American Forests’ new Meeting ReLeaf program, will offset the carbon footprint of the meeting and augment ASAE’s broader sustainability efforts. All the trees will be planted in Texas in honor of the host state for this year’s annual meeting.

“In the past five years, ASAE has made major strides in our efforts to make conferences and events more environmentally friendly and socially beneficial,” says John H. Graham IV, CAE, ASAE president and CEO. “Our collaboration with American Forests provides us with a great opportunity to help the local climate by planting trees and reducing our carbon footprint. I urge other associations to consider ways they can reduce their carbon emissions when possible.”>

Smart Member Recruitment: Use Evangelists

For effective member recruitment, highly engaged and long-term retained members are your first, best hope. Who more than these members are qualified to sing the praises of the value your membership organization delivers to members? These members could easily be converted to member recruitment evangelists. Since these members can also access their (non-member) colleagues far easier than can professional headquarter staff, why not make the most of what you’ve got?

Are You Leading from a Place of Fear?
Sixteen Signs You May Be Practicing Cowardly Leadership

It’s a tricky time to be a leader. With the economy so unforgiving right now, making smart business decisions is critical. That’s true not just in terms of strategy (whether to change your product mix or move into a new marketplace) but also relationships (whether to fire the toxic high performer or address a conflict head-on). All actions have consequences. So does lack of action. And with the margin for error so slim, you want to make sure you’re thinking as coolly and clearly as possible.

Number of Online Donors Jumps to Nearly 60 Percentt

The number of donors giving online has jumped to nearly 60 percent, according to a recent national study of online giving commissioned by Dunham+Company, an international marketing and fundraising firm.

According to the study, the percentage of donors who say they have given online has increased from 48 percent in 2010 to 57 percent in 2012.

The overall increase in online giving is largely attributable to a jump from 44 percent in 2010 to 58 percent in 2012 among the Baby Boomer generation (people born between 1946 and 1964). In other words, the survey indicates that the raw number of Boomers giving online has increased by almost one-third in the last two years.

Can Your Association Score 100?

A grade of 100 means you have mastered the subject—a perfect score when you were in school.

In an association, the daily tasks require doing a lot of things good but not having enough time to master every responsibility. Association management is a mix of administration, risk management, technology, public relations, governance, strategic thinking, customer service, and more. The organization should be operated as efficiently as any commercial business.
