Escalating Pension Costs Hurting Associations
Most associations and nonprofit organizations offering retirement benefits to their workers report that these plans are under stress, according to a survey released today by the Johns Hopkins Listening Post Project. Nonprofits offering defined benefit plans (plans with a guaranteed benefit) have been particularly hard hit, with 76 percent reporting that their plans are currently under stress and 43 percent reporting severe or very severe stress. Even those offering defined contribution plans (plans with investments controlled by the employee and no guaranteed benefit) have been affected, however, with 58 percent reporting that their plans are under stress.

Despite Economy, Association Salaries Rising
Despite the economic downturn, associations continue to offer competitive salaries and benefits, finds a new report from the Association Forum of Chicagoland. An annual survey of compensation, benefits and office practices at Chicagoland associations and nonprofits, the 2009 - 2010 Association Compensation and Benefits Survey sets industry standards that job applicants can use to determine their fair-market value, and that employers can use to find and retain top talent during both the recession and the recovery that follows. This critical survey will help CEOs to comply with the IRS Form 990 that requires details on how CEO compensation is established.

Obtaining and Maintaining Tax Exemption For Your Affiliates: The Mechanics, Pros and Cons of Group Exemption
The IRS's group exemption process allows closely related nonprofit organizations, such as a national organization and its affiliated chapters, to file for and maintain federal tax exemption as a group. In contrast to submitting individual applications, requiring detailed budgets and operational descriptions for each applicant, a group exemption is obtained by the parent organization through a one-time request for exempt status on behalf of any affiliate subject to its general supervision or control.

Despite Economy, American Express Anticipates Greater Travel in 2010
According to the American Express Global Business Travel Forecast, pent up trip demand coupled with supply base changes are likely to cause rates to slightly increase in most travel categories by the end of 2010. Business class airfares in particular are expected to increase in line with reduced capacity and on-going business demand for international travel.

NYC Announces Supports Nonprofit Cultural Groups
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President Seth W. Pinsky and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin announced five initiatives to support the 1,400 nonprofit cultural groups, 40,000 employees, and countless artists that comprise New York City’s cultural sector. As part of the initiatives, the City will provide space for art exhibitions, specialized job training, and financial guidance to cultural institutions and artists.

New York Life Foundation Seeks Proposals from New York City and Westchester Nonprofits
The New York Life Foundation announces its Request for Proposals for its 2010 Awards Program for organizations serving youth in New York City and Westchester. The Foundation will award six $25,000 grants, one in each of New York City’s five boroughs and one in Westchester County, to nonprofit organizations with an existing program that supports the Foundation’s educational enhancement category as part of its Nurturing the Children initiative.
